Deutsche Telekom brings forward climate-neutral target to 2025

Deutsche Telekom said it plans to achieve climate neutrality for in-house emissions by 2025 at the latest. Telekom originally planned to reduce CO2 emissions to zero and become climate neutral by 2050 at the latest.

In addition, the company will cut the emissions generated in the value chain, also referred to as Scope 3 emissions, to net zero by 2040, ten years earlier than originally planned. Over 80 percent of Telekom’s carbon footprint is generated from the value chain, for example from the production of devices or network technology, and from operations by customers.

To achieve net-zero emissions, Telekom plans to use energy more efficiently and measure it through the Energy Intensity KPI. This KPI shows energy consumption in proportion to the managed data volumes. In 2020, the KPI decreased to 119 for the group from 194 in 2017.

Telekom sources energy from renewable sources, which led to a reduction in CO2 of nearly 330,000 metric tons in 2020. Telekom also uses carbon capture and storage technology to remove carbon from the atmosphere.
