Deutsche Telekom plans to use Huawei when building its 5G network, CEO Timotheus Hottges told the group's AGM, Handelsblatt reports. Deutsche Telekom does not want to use equipment from Chinese suppliers for its core network, however. Deutsche Telekom relied previously on equipment supplied by Huawei for its mobile infrastructure, and this will also apply to the further development of its 4G and 5G network, the CEO said.
The German government has not yet decided whether Huawei is allowed to supply equipment for 5G network expansion. While Vodafone and Telefonica had already decided last year to use Huawei technology for their 5G networks, Deutsche Telekom has so far been reluctant to take a decision. In December, the operator declared that it would not sign any new contracts relating to 5G in view of the dispute within the coalition parties over the security measures to follow when developing 5G. In April, Deutsche Telekom informed the Federal Ministry of the Interior that it intended to intensify its cooperation with Huawei, Handelsblatt reports, citing sources.
