US media company Discovery Communications and Italian telecommunications group Telecom Italia (TIM) have teamed up to announce a broadcasting partnership culminating in the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics and the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games. Under the terms of the two-year deal, TIM’s mobile and broadband customers will receive free access to Eurosport Player, allowing them to watch every second of the Olympics live and enjoy exclusive VR and AR content, a 360-degree experience and over 30 additional feeds. As “Official Mobile Broadcaster”, TIM will also be able to offer its customers exclusive access to a 24/7 operator-branded linear news and highlights channel and exclusive short form content, available both online and on the go.
The deal comes after Discovery signed an agreement with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) back in June 2015 to secure exclusive multimedia rights across 50 countries and territories in Europe for the 2018-2024 Olympic Games. Commenting on the latest deal, Discovery Networks International CEO Jean-Briac Perrette said: “Our partnership with Italy’s biggest telco operator to create the first ever Olympic Mobile Broadcaster designation will enable us to deliver the ultimate Olympic Games viewing experience to millions of people.” At the Mobile World Congress, the Discovery CEO had outlined his plans to sub-licence rights to the Olympic Games in Europe to a mobile provider with a view to increasing the company’s reach from one billion screens to 10 billion.
As part of the deal, TIM subscribers will also get instant access to the Swimming World Championships, Athletics World Championships, French Open, Giro d’Italia, Tour de France and Basketball EuroCup on Eurosport Player.
