EU Council approves new roaming rules
The EU Council of ministers has approved the new regulations passed by parliament earlier this month, allowing lower rates to take effect from 01 July. The roaming regulations should be be published in the EU Official Journal of 30 June. In addition to extending wholesale and retail regulation of roaming prices, the new legislation adds structural measures aimed at opening up the roaming market to new service providers and expanding consumer choice. The regulation also lays down rules aimed at increasing price transparency and improving the provision of information on charges to roaming customers. The new regulations will run until 30 June 2022. The European Commission will review the functioning of the regulation by mid-2016.

The European Commission confirmed a new cut to roaming rates in the EU will take effect from 01 July. PTS sets out Swedish price caps under new EU roaming rules

Sweden's communications watchdog PTS said that when the new EU roaming regulations come into force on 01 July, the cost of a mobile voice call will fall to a maximum of SEK 3.21 per minute including VAT for Swedish users, from SEK 3.89. Data roaming will cost SEK 7.71 per 1 MB at most. Incoming calls may be charged at no more than SEK 0.88 per minute including VAT, down from SEK 1.22. Sending an SMS will cost SEK 0.99 including VAT at most, down from SEK 1.22.

Telefonica introduces single Pan-European mobile data tariff

Telefonica has launched a standard pan-European data roaming tariff. The service aims to avoid the 'bill shock'. Smartphone customers can now use 25 MB for internet access anywhere across the 27 European Union member states for EUR 2 per day. The tariff targets mobile customers on Movistar or O2 networks. The Pan-European tariff launched in Germany in May and will be available this summer to O2 and Movistar customers in Spain, the UK, Ireland, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
