
The worldwide pay-TV subscriber base surged by another 60 million year on year to reach 1.07 billion at the end of the third quarter, according to the latest data from Dataxis. Asia-Pacific and Europe together account for nearly 80 percent of the global subscriber base, with Asia-Pacific growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.5 percent between Q3 2016 and Q3 2017 to account for 62 percent of the global total while North and Latin America posted flat growth, said Dataxis.
In terms of technology, linear OTT grew at a CAGR of 13 percent due to popularity in Asia‐Pacific, Europe and Africa Middle‐East, followed by IPTV with 7 percent growth, above all in Asia‐Pacific and Europe. The report added that cable TV is showing a downward trend in almost all regions but still contributes more than 50 percent of the pay-TV subscriber base worldwide.
