Mexican ISPs agree to temporary MXN 100 a month coronavirus plans
Mexico's Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) has announced a further set of solidarity measures to mitigate the effects on consumers of the coronavirus epidemic, this time concerning the country’s main fixed broadband providers. The regulator has reached an agreement with Totalplay, Izzi, Telmex, Megacable and Maxcom to help millions of users who have had their income reduced due to the Covid-19 lockdown access essential internet services for home working and home schooling needs.

Under the terms of the deal, the operators will provide access to unlimited internet, albeit at reduced speeds of 2Mbps, for MXN 100 a month until 30 June, after which users will return to their contracted plan. To access the offer, users have to be up to date with their payments and agree not to use the plan to stream or download video content or video games. However, each company is free to propose its own specific conditions for consumption of video and gaming content, added the watchdog.
