Nkom names qualified bidders for 5G spectrum auction after accidental revelation

Nkom said that Ceragon Networks, Funn, GlobalConnect, Ice Communications Norway, Telenor Norway and Telia Norway have qualified to take part in the auction of radio frequency resources starting on 06 May. The deadline for applications was 12 March. This concerns spectrum in the 10 GHz, 13 GHz, 18 GHz, 23 GHz, 28 GHz, 32 GHz and 38 GHz bands.

Normally the names are kept secret but this time, an automatically generated e-mail from a download portal had revealed the addresses of the other recipients, so it is publishing the names to make sure everyone has the same information.

Qualified bidders are not obliged to take part in the auction. Knowing who has qualified has little significance for the individual operators’ bids. They are not allowed to cooperate during the auction and bidders are anonymised in the system, so that none of them knows who is making an offer for which frequencies.

Nkom said it does not expect at this time that the coronavirus will stop the auction from starting on time.

Nkom starts 5G auction, allows later payment because of coronavirus

Norwegian communications regulator Nkom said it has begun the auction for 4,739 MHz of 5G spectrum, with six bidders recorded. The frequencies are divided up into 65 blocks in eight bands, namely low 10 GHz, high 10 GHz, 13 GHz, 18 GHz, 23 GHz, 28 GHz, 32 GHz and 38 GHz. It is going ahead in spite of coronavirus but the winners can have their payment deadline postponed until November 2020, to relieve the economic burden caused by the pandemic.

Ice says coronavirus had neutral effect on roaming costs, subscription sales fell in March

More EU 5G auctions face delays, Netherlands and Poland to go ahead by June

A growing number of countries are delaying 5G spectrum auctions, as restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic make it difficult to maintain planning. The EU's deadline of June for the release of the 700 MHz band for 5G will be missed by several states as a result, including Spain and Austria. The Netherlands and Poland said they still aim to go ahead with auctions in the coming months.

Nkom proposes new but likely final price regulation for wholesale access to Telenor mobile network to stimulate Ice

Norwegian communications regulator Nkom said that it informing the EFTA Surveillance Agency (ESA) of proposed new terms for Telenor to grant rivals access to its mobile network. New price regulation intends to incentivise Ice to expand its own network as rapidly as possible. However, the watchdog expects the market to be able to function without its intervention in three years, and stated that this is likely to be its final price regulation.

The operator had previously declared 555,000 smartphone subscriptions by 30 September 2019.

Norwegian communications regulator Nkom said it will begin an auction of radio line frequencies on 06 May 2020, and the deadline for bidder registration is 12 March. In preparing for the auction, authorities and operators focused on the low frequency bands, which means the 13 GHz band and those below. Nkom has decided to allocate spectrum in the high 6 GHz and 8 GHz bands under transmission permits, rather than via auction.
