Orange grows underlying revenue 0.6% in Q1

Orange reported a third consecutive quarter of revenue growth in Q1, driven by improving results in Spain, Belgium and Africa. Revenues for the three months totaled EUR 10.009 billion, up 0.6 percent on a comparable basis and 3.5 percent higher on a reported basis.

In France, comparabale sales were still down 0.7 percent, due to lower roaming revenue, while Spain returned to growth for the first time in over two years, growing 1.8 percent. In Belgium and Luxembourg, revenue rose 2.3 percent, while Polish revenues were still down 4.1 percent. Africa & the Middle East increased sales 4.4 percent to 1.271 billion, and Enterprise revenues rose by 2.1 percent to EUR 1.583 billion.

Orange reported adjusted EBITDA down 1.6 percent on a comparable basis to EUR 2.569 billion, amid higher costs for a tower tax in Belgium, the upcoming Euro tournament in France and content, especially in Spain. Excluding the EUR 50 million impact of an employee shares programme, Orange said the result was up 0.3 percent. The company maintained its outlook for growth in full-year EBITDA on a comparable basis, driven by cost reductions.

Capital expenditure rose 10.4 percent year-on-year on a comparable basis to EUR 1.457 billion or 14.6 percent of revenue, in line with the increased investment planned under the Essentiels2020 programme. Orange said the higher investment is paying off in more broadband customers. It ended the quarter with over 20 million 4G users, or 2.0x more than a year ago, and fibre customers were also up 2.1x to 2.226 million at the end of March. That compares to total mobile customers of 191 million and 17.8 million fixed broadband subscribers.
