Prysmian awarded USD 38 mln Mexican fibre cable deal
Milan-listed cable maker Prysmian has been awarded a new contract worth USD 38 million to supply and install fibre cables for Mexico’s state-owned Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). Under the terms of the deal, Prysmian will provide a minimum of 9,800 km of OPGW cables and 5,100 km of ADSS cables for CFE’s “Red Electrica Inteligente” (REI) fibre-optic project. The OPGW cables will be produced in the group’s Spain-based Vilanova i la Geltru plant, while the ADSS cables will be manufactured in its Durango plant in Mexico.

The REI project is the largest ever launched by Mexico in terms of cable supply, said Prysmian, adding that the government’s aim is to connect remote regions in the country with high-speed broadband. Last year the country’s Undersecretariat of Communications and Technological Development set up a non-profit company called ‘Internet para Todos’ that will be using CFE’s wholesale fibre-optic network to meet president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s pledge to bring full internet coverage to all parts of the country.
