Qualcomm brings 5G to mid-range phones with Snapdragon 690 processor

Qualcomm Technologies has announced its first mid-range 5G processor, the Snapdragon 690. HMD Global (Nokia), LG Electronics, Motorola, Sharp, TCL and Wingtech are among the manufacturers that have adopted the new processor already for devices, with the first commercial launches expected in H2 2020. 

The Snapdragon 690 brings on-device AI and advanced entertainment options to more affordable phones, helping to boost take-up of 5G. The processor supports 4K HDR video, 120hz displays for fast refresh rates and the fifth-generation Qualcomm AI Engine for smart camera and video, voice translation, advanced AI based imaging and AI enhanced gaming experiences. 

The Snapdragon 690 features a Qualcomm Kryo 560 CPU, which the company says delivers up to 20 percent performance improvement compared to its predecessor. It also integrates the new Snapdragon X51 5G Modem, which is optimised for the Snapdragon 6 series to bring multi-gigabit speeds and superior coverage under 5G.
