Telefonica confirms possible data centre sale
Telefonica has confirmed that it’s evaluating the potential sale of some of its data centres, which “may result in one or several transactions, related to either all or some of those assets.” In a brief statement to Spanish markets watchdog CNMV, the company said the possible sale is part of its portfolio management policy, based on a strategy of value creation and strategic positioning. The confirmation follows a Bloomberg report indicating that Telefonica had hired financial advisers with a view to gauge interest from potential buyers including data centre specialist firms as well as infrastructure and private-equity funds.

Telefonica currently owns data centres in Spain, the US and Latin America. It's said to be looking to earn EUR 500 million to EUR 1 billion from the sale, depending on the assets included.

The Spanish group last month sold its Guatemala and El Salvador operations to America Movil for a total of EUR 570 million and is reportedly hoping to earn another EUR 500 million for its Cost Rica, Panama and Nicaragua units.
