US to extend Huawei temporary licence to serve customers for 90 days - report

The US government is expected to delay the full ban on American businesses selling to Huawei taking effect, sources familiar the with matter told Reuters. The Commerce Department will extend the "temporary licence" for certain applications of Huawei goods for another 90 days.

The department initially allowed Huawei to purchase some American-made goods in May shortly after blacklisting the company. The extension will renew the agreement set to lapse on 19 August, continuing the Chinese company’s ability to maintain existing telecommunications networks and provide software updates to Huawei handsets.

The temporary licence is seen as a key negotiating element in the US' talks with China on a new trade deal. The extension is expected to be announced on 19 August.
