The Belgian government has set up a new platform to help spread information and answer questions about 5G. The site over5g.be/parlons5G.be is designed to help reduce concerns about the impact of 5G networks on the environment and health, announced telecoms minister Petra de Sutter.
The site is supported by the federal government, health ministry, science agency, telecom regulator BIPT and the three regional governments. Additional information will be added based on questions from the public and stakeholders.
Belgium has a small, but active movement against 5G, with the latest in a series of protests planned for 20 June in Brussels. The Stop5G collective earlier tried to obtain a court order blocking the preliminary 5G permits issued last year, but was not successful in the case. The launch of the first 5G network by Proximus also met with resistance from a number of local governments, following complaints from the public about the potential health effects.
The campaign comes as the government moves forward with a 5G spectrum auction. Parliament has approved the necessary legislation, and the auction will be organised by BIPT for early next year.
