Meta is facing a GBP 2.3 billion class action lawsuit in the UK which claims that 44 million Facebook users were exploited between October 2015 and December 2019, reports The Guardian.
The lawsuit claims that Meta violated the 1998 Competition Act by imposing an "unfair price" on UK users for free access the social media platform by handing over personal data, which is used to generate most of Facebook's income . The case is being filed at the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) as an opt-out case by Dr Liza Lovdahl Gormsen, a competition law specialist at the British Institute of International & Comparative Law. As an opt-out case, affected Facebook users will not need to actively opt-in to the case to receive damages, and will be included in the claim unless they opt out. The case is supported by litigation funding company Innsworth in exchange for a share of any damages.
