French prosecutor orders Apple probe over planned iPhone obsolescence

The DGCCRF, France's anti-fraud and consumer protection agency, will lead a preliminary investigation over allegations that Apple misled iPhone customers and practised planned obsolescence, reports Le Monde. The probe was ordered by the Paris prosecutor examining the case recently brought to court by French association HOP, which has accused the company of intentionally shortening the lifespan of its smartphones.

In December, Apple issued a statement about how it artificially limits the processing power of iPhones carrying old batteries through software updates, an admission that immediately triggered lawsuits in the US market.
