Mexico has completed the liberalisation of spectrum in the 600MHz band after communications regulator IFT approved frequency changes to the last two DTT stations transmitting in the band. In a statement, the IFT said the culmination of the process means Mexico is the first country in the world to fully free up the 600MHz band after reallocating over 200 channels using the coveted frequencies since 2015.
The regulator added that it intends to tender around 70MHz of spectrum in the band for 5G connectivity in the near future. Earlier this year, the country activated the first phase of the ‘Red Compartida’ wholesale 4G shared network in the 700MHz band. The network covered around 32 percent of the country’s population on 31 March and the aim is to expand it to 50 percent of the population by 2020 and to 92.5 percent by 2024.Mexico first country to complete liberalisation of 600MHz band
