SK Telecom has signed memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with Ericsson, Nokia and Samsung Electronics, respectively, for joint research and development in advanced 5G and 6G mobile network technologies. Under the terms of the deal, SK Telecom will work with each company for the development of 5G network services. They will jointly promote development and commercialization of 5G technologies, including ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC), enhanced MIMO, differentiated 28GHz technology, and standalone 5G network.
SK Telecom will also conduct joint R&D projects with the three network equipment providers in the field of 6G mobile network technologies. The partners aim to draft technical requirements and new business models for 6G.
SK Telecom and its market competitors LG Uplus and KT commercially launched 5G services in April this year. SK Telecom used Nokia and Ericsson equipment for its 5G rollout.
At the beginning of this year, LG Electronics also announced plans to develop core technologies for 6G mobile networks in partnership with the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). LG Electronics opened a 6G research lab at KAIST in Daejeon, south of Seoul.
