WHO Health Alert brings Covid-19 facts to billions via WhatsApp

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is launching a messaging service with partners WhatsApp and Facebook to inform people about the coronavirus. This messaging service has the potential to reach 2 billion people and will enable WHO to get information directly into the hands of the people that need it.

This messaging service will provide the latest news and information on coronavirus including details on symptoms and the ways in which people can protect themselves and others. It also provides the latest situation reports and numbers in real time to help government decision-makers protect the health of their populations.

The service can be accessed through a link that opens a conversation on WhatsApp. Users can simply type “hi” to activate the conversation, prompting a menu of options that can help answer their questions about Covid-19.

The WHO Health Alert was developed in collaboration with Praekelt.Org, using Turn (www.Turn.io) machine learning technology.

Orange Spain has followed its offer for postpay customers by announcing bonus data for prepay subscribers to help them through the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak. The operator said all prepay subscribers can now access a bonus 15GB data bundle via the 'My Orange' app regardless of their contracted rate. Subscribers to its Love and Go-branded were given 30GB data for free, with business customers getting 50GB and Orange TV customers free afccess to the kids-oriented 'Infantil Max' package for 1 month.

Vodafone Germany activates short code for news alerts on Covid-19

Vodafone Germany said that it has activated the number 3333 to provide customers with reliable information on the spread of Covid-19. Customers can text the keyword "Corona" to the number in order to receive information from reliable sources such as the Robert Koch Institute, which is the government's central research institute for disease control, and federal authorities.

WhatsApp will be rolling out dark mode over the coming few days. The feature shows messages against a dark background and is reduced to reduce eye strain in low light environments.
