Deutsche Telekom forms Glasfaser NordWest joint venture with Ewe

Deutsche Telekom said it has established joint venture Glasfaser NordWest with Ewe. The new Glasfaser NordWest plans to offer FTTH connections to up to 1.5 million households and business sites through an investment of up to EUR 2 billion over the coming ten years.

The company will operate in parts of Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Bremen. In the first two years, Glasfaser NordWest will point out the expansion areas. Deutsche Telekom and Ewe will carry out the upgrades.

Then, Glasfaser NordWest will offer the opportunity to third parties to bid for the network expansion. Ewe, Deutsche Telekom, and all other interested firms will compete for the respective customers once the lines have been deployed.

The fibre network will become available to the first customers in 2020. Deutsche Telekom and Ewe had already signed a non-binding declaration of intent in December 2017 to form the joint venture, which does not have an expiration date. The two companies plan to register the joint venture with headquarters in Oldenburg once they receive approval from the cartel office.
