Ethiopian regulator extends deadline for telecom licence bids to 05 April

Ethiopia has extended the deadline for telecoms firms to bid for new operating licences to 05 April after requests from interested companies, the Ethiopian Communications Authority announced. The previous deadline for receipt of technical and financial bids was 05 March.

Winners will be given full operating licences, but they will not be allowed to offer mobile financial services, government officials said in 2020. They will also be required to set up their own network infrastructure, such as mobile phone towers, they said.

Kenyan operator Safaricom has expressed an interest in a consortium with Vodafone and Vodacom and estimated in 2019 that it would have to pay about USD 1 billion for a new licence. Other firms that have expressed an interest include MTN, Etisalat and Orange.
