HBO to stop services in Netherlands

HBO has announced plans to stop its activities in the Netherlands. From 01 January 2017, the premium broadcaster will no longer be available. Currently, it offers three channels, the streaming app HBO Go and the subscription VOD service HBO On Demand in the Netherlands. The news was first reported by Sparql and confirmed by HBO.

According to Telecompaper's latest report on the Dutch video market, HBO has around 360,000 subscribers in the Netherlands. The number has been growing in the past year, thanks in part of KPN offering the HBO package as one of the free options available to its 'KPN Compleet' subscribers, who take both fixed and mobile services from the operator. That offer started in May 2015, when HBO was estimated to have just over 200,000 subscribers. HBO Netherlands is 50 percent owned by Dutch cable operator Ziggo and 50 percent by the American broadcaster.
