Telefonica develops system to control capacity on Spanish beaches
Telefonica said it has developed a video surveillance system using IP cameras and 4G connectivity that’s designed to prevent crowding on Spanish beaches to prevent Covid-19 contagion. With Spain reopening the country to foreign tourists from 01 July, the government has ordered councils to ensure social distancing measures are followed on beaches. Telefonica’s system uses powerful software to calculate the percentage of occupation in real time, allowing the authorities to set a maximum number of bathers and avoid congestion.

The operator said the system simply detects areas that are occupied by beachgoers without recording images or storing any personal data. It has a more than 99 percent reliability and comes with user control panel, a map showing occupancy rates plus the ability to set up alerts on the phones of those responsible for monitoring the capacity.
