Telefonica has reached an agreement with Spain’s La Liga for the exclusive rights to broadcast the country’s top-tier football league to Spanish viewers for the 2015-16 season. In a joint statement, the parties said the deal amounts to EUR 600 million and covers the exclusive exploitation rights of the top two divisions as well as the domestic cup competition (Copa del Rey).
Telefonica had already signed a one-season rights deal with Barcelona for 2015-16, breaking off an eight-year relationship with Catalan-based broadcaster Mediapro. However, under the conditions imposed on Telefonica by regulators for its takeover of Canal+, the operator is obliged to offer 50 percent its 'premium' content to rivals for resale.
