Xiaomi unveils first 5G smartphone under low-cost Redmi brand

Xiaomi announced its first 5G smartphone under its low-cost Redmi brand. The Redmi K30 5G runs Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 756G processor and is designed to capture the quickly growing 5G market in China. The company also introduced a new laptop, smart speaker and router under the Redmi brand. 

The 5G model supports both SA and NSA 5G networks, and a 4G model of the K30 will also be available, running the Snapdragon 730. Xiaomi said both devices come with an integrated low-power consumption solution, 120Hz screen refresh rate and a 64MP camera with Sony’s IMX686 sensor. Prices start from CNY 1,599 (EUR 205) for the 4G model and CNY 1,999 for the 5G version, with options for 6 or 12 GB RAM and 128 or 256 GB storage.

Available in a choice of four colours, the Redmi K30 also features a 6.67-inch 20:9 screen with DualDotDisplay punch-hole design for a 91 percent screen-to-body ratio. The 4,500 mAh battery supports 30W fast charging with a new charging architecture and Mi Fast Charge technology.

The quad rear camera setup includes a 64-megapixel main camera with Sony’s IMX686 1/1.17-inch sensor, as well as a 4-in-1 1.6μm Super Pixel camera with Night Mode 2.0 feature and the latest RAW multi-frame AI noise reduction algorithm to capture details in low light conditions. It also features a 120-degree wide-angle camera, 2cm macro camera, professional portrait lens and a 20MP dual AI front camera for a natural bokeh effect. 

For videos, the device offers the Movie Mode which supports 2.39:1 anamorphic frame and twelve filter options as well as a Vlog mode with AI Chinese audio transcribing capabilities to add subtitles automatically.

The 4G model goes on sale 12 December, and the 5G version will be available from late January 2020. 

Redmi 13, smart speaker and home router

Xiaomi also unveiled a new laptop, the 13-inch Redmi 13. Weighing 1.23 kg with a metallic unibody finish, the computer comes with a 1080p FHD anti-glare display, 10th Generation Intel Core processor and 8GB DDR4 RAM and 512GB SSD on the top version. It also supports the MiDrop function, allowing users to work across multiple devices. The laptop goes on sale 12 December, starting at CNY 4,499. 

The other new Redmi products are the Redmi AI Speaker Play with a 5W speaker and IoT device controls. Priced at CNY 79, it comes with the third-generation XiaoAi digital assistant and is the first speaker from the company to feature a male voice option. Also for the home market is the Redmi Router AC2100, with dual-core four-threaded CPU, six high performance antennas and six-channel quality signal amplifiers. Able to support up to 2 Gbps, the modem can be controlled with the Mi Home app and is priced at CNY 169.
