Nearly 40 percent of Germans pay for video-streaming services - Bitkom

Nearly two out of five internet users in Germany (37 percent) said they stream films and TV series via paid on-demand portals like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Sky Ticket or Maxdome, according to a survey of 1,007 Germans over 14 by the digital industry association Bitkom. By comparison, only 29 percent said they used the paid services last year. These services are most popular among younger Germans, with nearly half (49 percent) of 14- to 29-year-olds saying they occasionally use paid streaming services to view films and TV series. A total of 39 percent of 30- to 49-year-olds and 32 percent of 50- to 64-year-olds said they use these subscription services.

Older Germans aged 65 and up are also increasingly using paid streaming services, said Bitkom. A fifth of Germans in this age group said they subscribe to a streaming service, compared to 13 percent in 2017 and only 8 percent in 2016. Forty percent of all users of these on-demand streaming services meanwhile said they use download functions to save and view films and TV series offline.
