Vodafone calls on regulator to suspend Telefonica-Yoigo deal

Vodafone Spain has submitted a formal complaint to the newly-created regulator CNMC (National Commission for Markets and Competition) denouncing the network-sharing agreement between Telefonica and TeliaSonera’s Spanish subsidiary Yoigo. Vodafone argues that the agreement should be temporarily suspended on grounds that it restricts competition, reports Europa Press.

The complaint submitted by Vodafone to the CNMC is a substantiation of the complaint filed at the now defunct watchdog CNC on 29 August. In the new complaint the company reiterates its arguments regarding the anti-competitive nature of the agreement between Telefonica and Yoigo, adding that the "virtual identity" of their respective Fusion offers is a clear indication of the "unusual degree of collaboration" between two operators that are supposed to be rivals in the telecoms market. In Vodafone’s opinion, the similarity of the ADSL-fibre and mobile packages offered by both companies is designed to limit competition in these two market sectors.

The formalisation of Vodafone’s complaint follows Orange Spain’s denunciation of the Telefonica-Yoigo agreement along very similar lines back in September. Orange complained to the CNC that the deal "virtually eliminates Yoigo from the market and transforms it into a distribution channel for Telefonica’s fixed-line services".
