Chile's VTR to expand FTTH to 400,000 more premises this year

Chilean cable operator VTR (Liberty Latin America) is set to continue investing heavily in its fibre-optic infrastructure to reach 400,000 more homes in 12 regions this year, reports business daily Diario Financiero. The company launched its first FTTH services in the coastal city of Quintero last September and connected some 120,000 homes to its fibre network in 2020, compared to 40,000 to its traditional HFC infrastructure.

Parent company Liberty Latin America said VTR halved its number of subscriber losses in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared to Q3 but the company shed around 45,000 customers in the year as a whole. In January it strongly rejected a complaint brought by consumer rights body Conadecus regarding the poor quality of its service, above all during the Covid-19 health emergency, saying it responded adequately and diligently to the surge in internet demand caused by coronavirus lockdowns.
