EU expert group to look at taxation of internet companies

The European Commission announced plans to set up an expert group to look at tax issues surrounding companies operating online and selling digital services. Algirdas Semeta, the commissioner for tax issues, said the current tax system was conceived in a "pre-computer age", leading to problems in the increasingly digital economy. The High Level Expert Group on Taxation of the Digital Economy will focus on identifying the key problems with digital taxation from an EU perspective and presenting a range of possible solutions. The Commission will then consider whether legislation is needed. The
