Telefonica confirms agreement to add Disney+ to Movistar+ in Spain

Telefonica and the Walt Disney Company have confirmed a widely expected agreement to add the forthcoming Disney+ SVOD service to the Movistar+ pay-TV offer in Spain. The US company will be launching its service as a standalone platform in Spain on 24 March, and the deal with Telefonica follows similar carriage agreements reached with Telecom Italia, Sky in the UK and Ireland, and Canal Plus in France. 

In a statement, Telefonica offered no specific details on how Movistar+ customers will enjoy Disney+ and how it will be integrated in the commercial offer but said the agreement reinforces the position of Movistar+ as the leading platform in the Spanish market. It already carries Netflix, La Liga and UEFA Champions League football, and will now offer content from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars and National Geographic, as well as more than 25 exclusive Disney Originals, 500 movies and 300 series at launch.

Disney and Telefonica are longstanding partners and previously worked together on a Movistar Disney channel, pop-up Movistar-Disney-Pixar channels, and other channels available on Movistar+, including HD Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney Junior.

Sky abandons OTT service in Spain, to shut down in September

Sky is shutting down its Spanish online pay-TV service on 01 September less than 3 years after the platform was launched, reports ADSL Zone, citing a short statement sent to subscribers. The company simply said it has had to take the difficult decision to cease its operations in Spain, adding that some of its content may be affected in the coming days.

Telefonica adds picture in picture function to Movistar+ TV

Telefonica has announced that subscribers to its Movistar+ pay-TV platform will be able to watch two channels at the same thanks to the new picture-in-picture (PiP) function. Starting 07 July, all subscribers with a UHD decoder and fibre access can watch one programme on the full TV screen at the same time as another displayed in a floating window. Nearly all channels support PiP mode, except M+, Clic Cinema, Multideporte, Netflix, Playboy, Mosaic F1 and F1's multi-camera channels.

Telefonica to offer Movistar Fest music channel throughout summer

La Liga preparing daily football games from 12 June

Spain's top-tier football league is preparing to air games "every day" for over a month if the season is allowed to restart next month, according to La Liga president Javier Tebas. Football matches have been suspended across the country since March due to the coronavirus outbreak but Tebas told a special edition of Movistar TV's 'El Partidazo' programme that the aim is to resume games behind closed doors on 12 June and to provide "interesting and groundbreaking" broadcasting options for fans.

HD Plus offers restart function for RTL channels

HD Plus said that its customers can now use the restart function also for RTL channels. Live programs can be restarted from the beginning for RTL HD, Vox HD, ntv HD, Nitro HD, RTLZwei HD and Super RTL HD. To date, the restart function was available only for the channels of ProSiebenSat.1 and Discovery Group. The service is part of the free HD Plus comfort function, which is integrated in the UHD TVs of Samsung and Panasonic manufactured from 2019, with the HD Plus channel package.

Telefonica has again acquired the Spanish broadcast rights to the UEFA Champions League, Europe's biggest annual football competition, for a total of EUR 1.1 billion, according to unnamed sources cited by specialist website Palco 23. Spanish TV audience surges to nearly 35 mln, viewing time to 10 hours

Spain's cumulative TV audience soared to a record of 34.9 million on 22 March, more than 2 million more than the March 2019 average, due to the country's coronavirus lockdown, reports local daily El Diario, citing Kantar Media data. The figure is equivalent to 77 percent of the population, with each viewer consuming almost 10 hours (599 minutes) of TV, including streamed video and video games, said the report, adding that 9 of the 10 most watched programmes were news bulletins.

Telefonica adds more channels to Movistar+ Lite pay-TV platform

Telefonica has expanded the content available on its Movistar+ Lite pay-TV platform, which can be accessed by customers of all operators. Shortly after announcing a month's free subscription for Telefonica customers and non-customers alike, the operator has added the premium channels Canal Hollywood and TCM to the catalogue as well as Spain's 6 main DTT channels (La 1, La 2, Antena 3, Cuatro, Telecinco and La Sexta).
