ICASA receives 35 applications for spectrum under emergency regulations

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) said it has received about 35 applications in response to the invitation through the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) COVID-19 National Disaster Regulations issued on 06 April. ICASA has made available International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) spectrum in the 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz bands for temporary assignment for the duration of the National State Disaster. 

ICASA has informed all stakeholders that it is currently applying its mind and analysing all the applications to ensure compliance with the criteria and conditions stipulated in Annexure A of the Regulations. It reiterated that it intends to take the necessary care and ensure that the release of the spectrum for use on an emergency basis is fair and non-discriminatory.

The Independent Communications Authority of SA (ICASA) plans to issue an invitation to apply (ITA) for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) spectrum, commonly known as high-demand spectrum, at the end of June, ITWeb reported. ICASA told a briefing of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Communications on the licensing of high-demand spectrum, that the release of spectrum through an auction has been high on the government's agenda.

ICASA responds to Telkom concerns on assignment of 2300 MHz spectrum

The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) said it has received letters from Telkom objecting to the assignment of radio frequency spectrum in the range 2360 – 2400 MHz of the Fixed Services (Frequency Division Duplex or FDD) portion of the 2300MHz band. Telkom South Africa has taken issue with the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) over its recent allocation of spectrum as part of an emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa, MyBroadband.co.za reports. The Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) has announced the release of emergency spectrum to meet the spike in broadband demand caused by the coronavirus lockdown.
