Telmex fined again for refusing interconnection
Mexico's antitrust regulator CFC has imposed a fine of MXN 91.5 million (approximately USD 7.8 million) on Mexican fixed-line operator Telmex for denying GTM, a Telefonica subsidiary, the right to interconnect with its network. According to the CFC ruling, by not providing interconnection to market competitor GTM for a period of seven months in 2007 and 2008, Telmex impeded GTM's access to the Mexican telephony market. As only one operator was affected and for a limited period of time, the fine is much lower than the law allows in cases of repeated violations of antitrust regulations, the CFC added. Telmex has 30 days to appeal the competition watchdog's decision. Back in April, CFC fined America Movil's mobile subsidiary Telcel MXN 11.99 billion (approximately USD 1 billion) for alleged monopoly practices associated with mobile call termination on the Telcel network.
